William and John Hakes were the two youngest sons of John Hakes Snr. who was a butcher and farmer. They lived at Wisteria House, Creswell Road, Cuckney (still standing). There were two girls in the family who both lived into their late 90's. The children would have attended Cuckney School. Two older brothers survived the war-Frank joined the Coldstream Guards and was later commissioned into the Royal West Surrey Regiment. The other brother Alfred was a miner in 1916. He took over the farm in 1925, but died in 1931. Alfred's children continued to farm in Cuckney until the 1960's.
When Frank was at school between 1892 and 1900, the children didn't have paper and used slate and chalk instead.
